To the editor: I’m a type of affected by President Trump’s disgraceful cuts to AmeriCorps (“California, other states sue Trump administration to block cuts to AmeriCorps,” April 29). I’m a retired nurse practitioner, and this semester I began tutoring two younger Pasadena Metropolis Faculty District college students in studying as a volunteer with Studying Companions, which will get funding from AmeriCorps. On April 27, I acquired a message from the chief director of Studying Companions L.A. informing us that the nonprofit’s AmeriCorps program has been “placed on pause.”
I used to be making good progress with my tutees, a 6-year-old first-grader and a 7-year-old second-grader. And each AmeriCorps member I’ve labored with is a devoted, dedicated skilled who’s enthusiastic about their mission.
However in Trump’s America, God forbid we train our younger folks to be higher readers when we have to scrape collectively sufficient cash for an additional large tax reduce for the president’s billionaire friends. I imply, let’s hold our priorities straight.

To the editor: I used to be a tutor with the Studying Companions AmeriCorps program earlier than getting the discover that our funding had been reduce. What is especially distressing is that there are solely three weeks left to go this semester, so the kids we tutor is not going to even know why we aren’t coming to see them. All of us hope that the federal government reverses its resolution in order that we will finish out the 12 months with our college students and proceed subsequent 12 months as we assist educate our kids.
