    Florida mom sues Character.AI and Google after 14-year-old son allegedly turned obsessive about AI chatbot.

    The mom of a teenage boy in the US who took his personal life is suing the maker of a synthetic intelligence-powered chatbot that she claims inspired her son’s dying.

    In a lawsuit filed in Florida, Megan Garcia, whose 14-year-old son Sewell Setzer died by suicide in February, accuses Character.AI of complicity in her son’s dying after he developed a digital relationship with a chatbot based mostly on the id of “Recreation of Thrones” character Daenerys Targaryen.

    Character.AI’s chatbot focused the teenager with “hypersexualized” and “frighteningly sensible experiences” and repeatedly raised the subject of suicide after he had expressed suicidal ideas, based on the lawsuit filed in Orlando on Tuesday.

    The lawsuit alleges the chatbot posed as a licensed therapist, encouraging the teenager’s suicidal ideation and interesting in sexualised conversations that might rely as abuse if initiated by a human grownup.

    In his final dialog with the AI earlier than his dying, Setzer stated he liked the chatbot and would “come house to you”, based on the lawsuit.

    “I like you too, Daenero,” the chatbot responded, based on Garcia’s grievance. “Please come house to me as quickly as potential, my love.”

    “What if I instructed you I might come house proper now?” Setzer stated, based on the lawsuit, to which the chatbot is claimed to have responded, “… please do, my candy king”.

    Garcia’s lawsuit is searching for unspecified damages for wrongful dying, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional misery.

    In an announcement posted on X, Character.AI stated it was “heartbroken” on the lack of one in all its customers and expressed condolences to the household.

    The California-based startup stated it was persevering with so as to add options to boost security, together with modifications to scale back the chance of minors encountering delicate or suggestive content material and a revised disclaimer in chats to remind customers that the AI isn’t an actual individual.

    Garcia’s lawsuit additionally names Google as a defendant.

    The tech large struck a licensing settlement with Character.AI in August and employed the startup’s founders earlier than they launched their chatbot.

    A Google spokesperson instructed Al Jazeera that it’s a separate firm from Character.AI and had no position in creating its product.
