    To the editor: In 1942, when FDR was president and I used to be in an eighth-grade civics class in Los Angeles, our trainer advised us that the one distinction between the Republicans and Democrats was that the Republicans need protecting tariffs and the Democrats don’t.

    In that day, I didn’t actually know what a tariff was. It took 83 years and a president named Trump to really accomplish this economically unsound thought. With my inventory portfolio sinking to a brand new low, I now know what a tariff is.
