The French president says his US counterpart’s Greenland takeover threats should not one thing allies do.

French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in Greenland with a “message of solidarity and friendship” from Europe and castigated United States President Donald Trump’s repeated threats that he intends to take management of the strategic autonomous Danish territory as not “one thing to be finished between allies”.

Macron reiterated his condemnation on Sunday on the Arctic island’s Nuuk airport, the place he was greeted by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

“It’s necessary to point out that Denmark and Europe are dedicated to this territory, which has very excessive strategic stakes and whose territorial integrity have to be revered,” Macron added.

“It means so much to me … to convey a message of friendship and solidarity from France and the European Union to assist this territory face the totally different challenges: financial growth, training, in addition to the implications of local weather change,” he continued.

    ‘Not on the market’

Since returning to the workplace in January, Trump has repeatedly stated the US wants Greenland, a strategically situated territory on the crossroads of the Atlantic and the Arctic, for security reasons and has not dominated out taking the territory by pressure.

Nonetheless, Denmark has vehemently pressured that Greenland “is not for sale”.

Macron, who’s the primary international head of state to go to Greenland since Trump’s threats, stated in a speech final week on the United Nations Ocean Convention that Greenland and the deep seas weren’t “up for grabs”.

US Protection Secretary Pete Hegseth appeared to acknowledge that the Pentagon had developed plans to take over Greenland and Panama by pressure, if mandatory, final week.

The Wall Road Journal reported final month that a number of high-ranking officers below the director of nationwide intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, had been ordered to research Greenland’s independence motion and US useful resource extraction within the territory.

However in Greenland, polls point out that the overwhelming majority of the nation’s 57,000 inhabitants could need to turn into impartial from Denmark, however they don’t need to be part of the US.

Whereas Greenland is just not a part of the EU, it’s on the bloc’s listing of Abroad Nations and Territories (OCTs).

Throughout Macron’s six-hour go to earlier than he travels to Canada for a Group of Seven assembly that Trump can also be anticipated to attend, he plans to debate Arctic safety and methods to incorporate Greenland in “European motion” to contribute to its growth whereas “respecting its sovereignty”, his workplace stated.

Following talks with Frederiksen and Nielsen, Macron can also be set to go to a glacier to witness the consequences of world warming.
