Re: “Israel plans to seize Gaza under a new plan, officials say” (Might 4, Nation & World):
My spouse, Mary Anne O’Neil, and I have been not too long ago in Israel for Holocaust Remembrance Day. We visited the heartbreaking scene at Hostages Sq. in Tel Aviv. Their footage are all over the place; an enormous seder desk is ready for them. The mother and father of Alon Ohel, one of many remaining estimated 24 residing hostages, left his yellow piano there with a “You Are Not Alone” signal. Mary Anne performed “Danny Boy.” Now that tens of 1000’s of reservists have been referred to as for an expanded navy marketing campaign, return of the hostages grows dimmer.
On Holocaust Remembrance Day, 1000’s of Israelis in Tel Aviv lined the streets holding pictures of Palestinian kids who’ve been killed in the course of the struggle. Kids signify 44% of the greater than 50,000 Palestinians killed since Oct. 7, 2023. Among the many protesters have been dozens of girls wearing black holding empty pots to represent the catastrophic hunger in Gaza. In Jerusalem, two of my buddies, Ilana and Chana, Holocaust survivors of their 80s, held this signal on the entrance to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial: “If we lose our compassion for the Different, we’ve got misplaced our Humanity.”
Why can we proceed to arm and fund this horrific slaughter?
