    Columbia lays off nearly 180 after Trump pulled $400M over antisemitism

    In March, the Trump administration pulled the funding over what it described because the Ivy League faculty’s failure to squelch antisemitism on campus through the Israel-Hamas warfare that started in October 2023.

    Inside weeks, Columbia capitulated to calls for laid out by the Republican administration as a place to begin for restoring the funding.

    Among the many necessities was overhauling the college’s scholar disciplinary course of, banning campus protesters from sporting masks, barring demonstrations from tutorial buildings, adopting a brand new definition of antisemitism and placing the Center Jap research program beneath the supervision of a vice provost who would have a say over curriculum and hiring.

    Columbia was on the forefront of US campus protests over the warfare final spring. Professional-Palestinian demonstrators arrange an encampment and seized a campus constructing in April, resulting in dozens of arrests and galvanizing a wave of protests nationally.

    Trump, when he retook the White Home in January, moved swiftly to chop federal cash to high schools and universities he seen as too tolerant of antisemitism.
