To the editor: I used to be deeply disturbed to learn that Los Angeles is being sued over its sanctuary metropolis coverage, with claims that such protections someway precipitated unrest and riots (“Trump administration sues Mayor Karen Bass, L.A. City Council over sanctuary policy,” June 30). Let’s be clear: Blaming sanctuary insurance policies for civil disturbances ignores the true roots of public frustration — injustice, poverty, systemic racism and abuse of energy.
Sanctuary insurance policies have been by no means about defying federal regulation. They’re about defending probably the most weak amongst us — individuals who fled violence, poverty or political instability in hopes of constructing a greater life. Many have lived right here for many years, raised youngsters, contributed to our economic system and paid taxes. These are usually not criminals. They’re our neighbors.
We want immigration reform that displays each equity and humanity, together with an actual pathway to citizenship for these already woven into the material of our communities. Raids on law-abiding, longtime residents are usually not justice. They’re cruelty disguised as coverage.
Let’s not permit fear-driven narratives to drown out the reality. We’re higher than this.
