    Hong Kong mogul Jimmy Lai grilled over US, Taiwan ties

    HONG KONG: Jailed Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai testified on Thursday (Jan 16) that he brokered conferences between former Taiwan chief Tsai Ing-wen and American institution figures, with prosecutors alleging that he colluded with international forces.

    Lai is among the most distinguished figures to be prosecuted below Hong Kong’s nationwide safety regulation, which Beijing imposed in 2020 following large pro-democracy protests within the metropolis.

    Lai first took the witness stand in November and prosecutors started cross-examination on Thursday after defence attorneys wrapped up their questioning.

    On Thursday, Lai mentioned he arrange a paid “consultancy” association in 2017 the place retired United States normal Jack Keane and former US deputy secretary of defence Paul Wolfowitz would meet with Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan’s chief on the time.
