Tom Brady’s comments about hit that injured Trevor Lawrence miss the mark

Surprisingly, former New England Patriots star Tom Brady is not being extra protecting of his fellow quarterbacks.

On Tuesday, the NFL suspended Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair for his late hit on Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence in Week 13. Lawrence suffered a concussion throughout the play.

When requested concerning the collision on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” Brady did not rise up for QBs and mentioned the league ought to amend its guidelines to assist defensive gamers.

“It is gone to some extent the place everybody will label a sure participant as a unclean participant, I do not like that one bit,” the seven-time Tremendous Bowl champion mentioned Tuesday.

“Possibly they wonderful or penalize a QB for sliding late. And say look if we do not need these hits to happen, we have to penalize the offense and the protection slightly than simply penalize a defensive participant for each single play that occurs when there is a hit on a QB.”

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans echoed Brady’s sentiments in his Monday news conference.

“After all, the unlucky hit on the QB. Nevertheless it’s two-fold,” Ryans mentioned. “Loads of the QBs at the present time attempt to make the most of the rule the place they slide late, and so they attempt to get an additional yard.”

Nonetheless, Brady and Ryans are lacking the purpose. Whereas the NFL has modified its guidelines to favor QBs in recent times, that is not an excuse for reasonable pictures.

“That is a dumb hit on [Al-Shaair’s] half,” Jaguars defensive finish Josh Hines-Allen mentioned in a postgame information convention, by way of WJAX-TV in Jacksonville. “We discuss this stuff. We all know easy methods to play soccer. A few years in the past, that might’ve been an important hit, however now that wasn’t play on him.”

These hits may also trigger brawls. After Al-Shaair knocked out Lawrence, a melee between the Jaguars and Texans ensued.

Ryans and Brady ought to rethink their feedback. Letting soiled performs slide would set a harmful precedent, and suspending Al-Shaair was the precise transfer.
