    Lithuania says it will ask ICC to investigate Belarus deportations

    VILNIUS: Lithuania stated on Monday (Sep 30) it should ask the Worldwide Legal Courtroom (ICC) to analyze Belarus over “forcible deportation, persecution and different merciless behaviour” towards its personal residents.

    The motion was introduced by Lithuania’s justice ministry and drew rapid assist from exiled Belarusian opposition chief Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

    “The crimes dedicated by this regime, from compelled deportations to unlawful arrests and torture, can’t go unpunished. Lithuania’s braveness provides us hope that the world is lastly holding the regime accountable for its atrocities,” Tsikhanouskaya stated in an announcement.

    She stated about 300,000 Belarusians had been compelled to flee the nation, with each thirtieth resident of Belarus now dwelling in exile.

    Tsikhanouskaya ran towards Belarusian chief Alexander Lukashenko in a presidential election in August 2020. She fled the nation after he was proclaimed the winner, in a end result that the opposition and Western governments denounced as fraudulent.

    The election triggered mass protests that have been crushed by Lukashenko’s safety equipment. Hundreds of individuals have been arrested, whereas others left the nation, some through neighbouring Lithuania.
