China slams ‘lies and smears’ after Canadian ex-diplomat alleges torture

BEIJING: China on Tuesday (Sep 24) condemned “lies and smears” and defended its three-year detention of former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig after he alleged psychological torture throughout his imprisonment within the nation.

Canadians Michael Spavor and Kovrig, who grew to become referred to as “the 2 Michaels”, have been detained by Beijing in December 2018 in obvious retaliation for the arrest in Vancouver of a senior Huawei govt on a US warrant.

All three of them have been freed in September 2021.

In an interview with Canadian broadcaster CBC launched on Monday, Kovrig alleged he was held in solitary confinement and that guards tried to “bully and torment and terrorise and coerce” him throughout his confinement in Beijing.

“The United Nations commonplace is not more than 15 days in solitary confinement. Greater than that’s thought of psychological torture. I used to be there for practically six months,” he advised CBC.

Requested about Kovrig’s claims at a daily briefing, Chinese language overseas ministry spokesman Lin Jian insisted “China is a rustic beneath the rule of legislation”.

“Lies and smears can’t change the truth that the individual you talked about broke the legislation and dedicated crimes,” he mentioned.

“We advise the related events to respect the details and mirror on their errors,” he added.

Beijing’s 2018 to 2021 detentions of “the 2 Michaels” on espionage costs plunged bilateral relations right into a deep freeze.

Kovrig advised CBC his detention was “psychologically, completely, probably the most gruelling, painful factor I’ve ever been by way of”.

“It is a mixture of … whole isolation and relentless interrogation for six to 9 hours each day, on and on and on,” he mentioned.
