THE HAGUE: President Donald Trump forged doubt on Tuesday (Jun 24) over the USA’ dedication to defending its NATO companions, suggesting there have been “quite a few” definitions to the cornerstone of the alliance’s mutual defence clause.
Trump was chatting with reporters en path to a NATO summit within the Netherlands, a two-day gathering which is meant to sign to Russian President Vladimir Putin that NATO is united, regardless of Trump’s previous criticism, and decided to develop and improve its defences to discourage any assault from Moscow.
Nonetheless, pressed by reporters on Air Pressure One over whether or not he remained dedicated to mutual defence amongst allies as set out by NATO’s Article 5, Trump responded:
“I am dedicated to saving lives. I am dedicated to life and security. And I’ll offer you a precise definition after I get there.”
