President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia ordered a three-day unilateral cease-fire in Ukraine subsequent week, the Kremlin stated on Monday, after President Trump reiterated his frustration with Russia’s refusal to cease the conflict.

The Kremlin stated that Russian forces would cease combating on Could 8 for 72 hours to mark the May 9 celebration of the Soviet Union’s victory in World Struggle II, a serious vacation in Russia. The announcement was the second time in two weeks that Russia promised a short lived pause within the combating.

“Throughout this era, all hostilities will stop,” the Kremlin stated in an announcement. “Russia believes that the Ukrainian aspect ought to comply with this instance.”

Mr. Putin’s spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, stated the declaration “underlines our willingness to get on the trail towards a peaceable decision.”

Nevertheless, Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s international minister, responded to the Kremlin assertion by saying that “if Russia actually needs peace, it should stop hearth instantly.” He added that Ukraine remained prepared for a 30-day halt within the combating, one thing that Mr. Putin has to date rejected.

“Why wait till Could eighth?” Mr. Sybiha wrote on X. He continued, “Ukraine is able to assist an enduring, sturdy, and full ceasefire.”

The Kremlin’s announcement got here simply days after Mr. Trump urged Mr. Putin, in a social media post, to “STOP!” bombarding Ukraine amid U.S.-backed efforts to dealer a truce. After assembly with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine on Saturday, Mr. Trump stated that he questioned whether or not Mr. Putin actually wished peace.

“Possibly he doesn’t need to cease the conflict, he’s simply tapping me alongside, and needs to be handled otherwise,” Mr. Trump wrote in a social media post.

Russia has refused to abide by a 30-day unconditional cease-fire that Ukraine beforehand agreed to on the urging of the Trump administration. A one-day truce introduced by Mr. Putin for Easter didn’t maintain, although either side stated it introduced a discount in hostilities.

Mr. Putin’s declaration on Monday gave the impression to be his newest try and placate Mr. Trump’s oft-stated need to finish the conflict in Ukraine whereas holding out for an settlement that will enable the Russian chief to take action on his phrases.

When requested concerning the Kremlin’s announcement, Karoline Leavitt, Mr. Trump’s press secretary, advised reporters that the U.S. president “has made it clear he needs to see a everlasting cease-fire.”

“Whereas he stays optimistic he can strike a deal, he’s additionally being lifelike as nicely, and each leaders want to return to the desk to barter their manner out of this,” Ms. Leavitt added.

The Kremlin’s assertion asserting the cease-fire stated that Russia was prepared “for peace negotiations with out preconditions.” However it added that these talks must be “directed at eliminating the foundation causes of the Ukrainian disaster,” a reference to Mr. Putin’s sweeping calls for for change in Russia’s favor in Ukraine and in Europe.

Mr. Putin seems satisfied that he would quit negotiating leverage if he had been to cease combating with out securing main concessions first, Russian analysts and other people near the Kremlin say. His calls for go nicely past claims on Ukraine’s territory, extending to limits on its future navy functionality and a ban on admitting it to the NATO alliance.

The Trump administration has largely gone together with Mr. Putin’s narrative, dangling the potential of lifting sanctions on Russia whereas blaming Ukraine for a conflict that Russia began in 2022. It has been pushing Ukraine to just accept a peace plan that will pressure it to desert its aspirations of becoming a member of NATO, present it with solely imprecise safety ensures and have the USA formally acknowledge Crimea as Russian. Ukraine has rejected that deal, which the Trump administration described as its ultimate provide.

However Mr. Putin seems to be holding out for much more. Within the meantime, his refusal to make a fast deal — accompanied by current Russian missile strikes on civilian targets — has increasingly frustrated the Trump administration.

On Sunday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the USA would decide this week whether to continue pursuing a settlement.

“We’ve got to make a dedication about whether or not that is an endeavor that we need to proceed to be concerned in,” he stated on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” “or if it’s time to form of deal with another points which might be equally if no more essential in some circumstances.”
