A volcano in southwestern Iceland started erupting on Tuesday, prompting the closure of the popular Blue Lagoon vacationer vacation spot and threatening the city of Grindavik, about 25 miles southwest of the capital, Reykjavik.
The nation’s meteorological office said that the size of the magma intrusion — about seven miles — was the longest measured since November 2023, when the authorities ordered Grindavik’s roughly 4,000 residents to evacuate.
The eruption started at 9:45 a.m., and inside half-hour a fissure within the Earth’s floor gave the impression to be about half a mile lengthy, in keeping with the meteorological workplace.
By 11 a.m., the workplace mentioned, the primary fissure had grown and one other had opened a number of hundred yards from the protecting obstacles close to Grindavik.
