Absent from Sen. Alan Simpson’s obituary was his treatment of Anita Hill during the Clarence Thomas hearings

To the editor: Conspicuous by its absence in your laudatory obituary of Sen. Alan Simpson was any point out of the Wyoming Republican’s despicable slandering of regulation professor Anita Hill throughout the Clarence Thomas affirmation hearings (“Former Sen. Alan Simpson of Wyoming, who bridged partisan gaps with his quick wit, dies at 93,” March 14).

There are these of us who will always remember his declare that he was being flooded with letters “over the transom” telling him to “watch out for this woman” — letters that he by no means produced. His shameful therapy of Hill ought to not less than have been talked about to offer a full and correct image of this man.

    Angela M Sousa, Beverly Hills

    ..

To the editor: When my spouse and I have been on the Lodge at Torrey Pines for a golf match a couple of years in the past, we met a most pleasant gentleman who turned out to be Simpson. We chatted for some time, and I requested him if he lived his whole life in Wyoming. He shortly replied with a smile, “Not but.” I known as him later that 12 months in Cody, Wyo., and we visited for about 10 minutes. That was our final goodbye.

As destiny would have it, “Not but” sadly arrived a couple of days in the past at his age of 93. In the event you had met him, you’ll have liked him for his open friendliness and fast wit. So, buddy, preserve a watch on the Senate from above; it’s worthwhile.
