    Trump metals tariffs draw swift retaliation from Canada and EU

    WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump’s elevated tariffs on all US steel and aluminum imports took effect on Wednesday (Mar 12), stepping up a marketing campaign to reorder international commerce in favor of the US and drawing swift retaliation from Canada and Europe.

    Trump’s motion to bulk up protections for American metal and aluminum producers restores efficient tariffs of 25 per cent on all imports of the metals and extends the duties to lots of of downstream merchandise, from nuts and bolts to bulldozer blades and soda cans.

    US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated nothing might cease the tariffs and Trump would impose commerce protections on copper as effectively.

    Shut US allies Britain and Australia criticised the blanket tariffs, with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese saying the transfer was “in opposition to the spirit of our two nations’ enduring friendship”. Nonetheless, each nations dominated out quick tit-for-tat duties.

    The opposite nations most affected by the tariffs are Brazil, Mexico and South Korea, which all loved some stage of exemptions or quotas.
